RAMS combine a risk assessment, which identifies the hazards and how they are controlled, with a method statement, which sets out how the job will be done safely, step by step. Principal contractors reject RAMS that are generic. Good RAMS describe this job, on this site, with these people.
The risk assessment
- The hazards of the task and the site.
- Who might be harmed, and how.
- The controls, working down the hierarchy: eliminate, substitute, engineer, organise, then protective equipment.
- What risk remains, and who checks the controls are in place.
The method statement
- The scope of the work and where it happens on site.
- The sequence of work, step by step.
- Plant, equipment and materials.
- People, competence and supervision.
- Permits needed, such as hot works, confined spaces or excavations.
- Access, exclusion zones and how you interface with other trades.
- Emergency and rescue arrangements.
- Environmental controls for dust, noise, waste and spills.
Why RAMS get rejected
- Copied from another job, with the wrong site details.
- No clear sequence of work.
- Controls that do not match the hazards.
- Missing lifting plans, permits or rescue plans.
- Not signed off, or never briefed to the team.
Make them work on site
- Brief the RAMS to the team before work starts, and record who attended.
- Keep a copy where the work is happening.
- Stop and review if the method or conditions change.
Note: Risk assessment is a legal duty for employers. Method statements are not required by law in the same way, but most clients and principal contractors ask for them to show a safe system of work.
