Questions and answers

Which service do I need?

Find your question and open it. Each answer sets out what the law expects, what to do, and how NXT-HSE can help.

Using a consultant helps you meet your duties; the legal responsibility stays with your business.

A client wants CHAS before I can tender. What do I need to do?

CHAS accreditation

What to do

Check which CHAS level your client is asking for, then gather the evidence the assessment looks for: your health and safety policy, risk assessments, method statements, training records and, for some levels, environmental and other policies. CHAS assessors review your application and make the decision.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE checks what you already have against the level you need, fills the gaps with documents that reflect how you really work, and supports you through the application and any feedback from the assessor.

Why do my RAMS keep coming back with comments?

RAMS

What to do

Usually because they are generic: the wrong site details, no clear sequence of work, or controls that do not match the hazards. Principal contractors want RAMS that describe this job, on this site, with these people, and that are briefed to the team before work starts.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE writes or reviews your RAMS around how the work is really done, and updates them so they answer the principal contractor's comments properly.

A project is about to start on site. What do I need in place?

Construction phase plans

What to do

Under CDM 2015, a construction phase plan must be drawn up before the construction phase begins, by the principal contractor or, on a single-contractor project, the contractor. You also need welfare facilities from the start, site inductions, and suitable arrangements for managing the work.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE develops a proportionate construction phase plan built around the real risks of your project, and helps you keep it up to date as the work, the programme or the team changes.

Someone has been hurt at work, or there was a near miss. What should I do?

Accident investigations

What to do

Deal with the emergency and make the area safe first, and call 999 if needed. Check whether the incident must be reported to HSE under RIDDOR: that duty stays with the responsible person. Then investigate, to find the immediate and underlying causes and stop it happening again.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE carries out structured investigations: gathering the evidence, speaking to the people involved, finding the root causes and setting out practical actions in a clear report.

How do I know how safe my business or site really is?

Audits

What to do

Check your arrangements against what actually happens at work. Monitoring and reviewing health and safety is part of managing it, and an audit looks at both your paperwork and the work itself: policies, risk assessments, training, supervision and site conditions.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE audits the paperwork and the work on the ground, then hands over a prioritised action plan, with owners, that your team can act on.

My team is unsure who does what under CDM. Where do we start?

Online CDM training

What to do

CDM 2015 gives specific duties to clients, designers, principal designers, contractors, principal contractors and workers. Everyone with a role needs to understand their own duties, the key documents, and how their work fits with everyone else's.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE runs online CDM training that explains the roles, documents and handovers in plain language, using real project scenarios, so your team can apply it on their next job.

How do we support mental health and make it safe to speak up?

Mental health

What to do

Start by assessing the causes of work-related stress, using HSE's Management Standards, and talk to your team. Make it normal to raise concerns, report near misses and ask for help, and make sure everyone knows where support is.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE helps managers and teams build mental health awareness and psychological safety, with practical tools that fit site life.

Do I need a health and safety adviser?

HSE advice

What to do

Every employer must have competent help to meet their health and safety duties, under regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. That help can come from inside your business or from outside it.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE gives you an adviser who gets to know your business and answers everyday questions plainly, from policies and risk assessments to legal duties and environmental good practice.

We need regular health and safety help but cannot justify a full-time manager. What are our options?

HSE retainer

What to do

Every employer must have competent help to meet their duties, but it does not have to be an employee: it can come from outside the business. Regular support can cover everyday advice, site inspections, document reviews and toolbox talks, so problems are found early rather than after an incident.

How NXT-HSE helps

NXT-HSE offers monthly packages from £250 a month, with set consultancy hours and site visits, or pay-as-you-go support with no monthly fee.
